the 2nd of March and the 61st Day of 2023. As part of our Heritage Month celebration, we are looking at THE ORIGIN & MEANING OF THE NAME GHANA.
The name Ghana is believed to have originated from the Soninke language, which was spoken by the people of the ancient Ghana empire. The Soninke word “Ghana” means “warrior king” or “warrior chief”, and it was likely the title of the king or ruler of the ancient Ghana empire.
It is important to note that the name “Ghana” originally referred to the ancient kingdom that existed in present-day Mauritania and Mali, and not to the modern-day country of Ghana.
The name “Ghana” was first used by European explorers and traders who visited the West African coast in the 15th century, and it eventually became the name used to refer to the entire region.
When the British established a colony in the region in the late 19th century, they named it the Gold Coast, but after the country gained independence in 1957, it was renamed Ghana in honor of the ancient empire.
Today, the name Ghana is associated with the rich cultural heritage and history of the region, as well as the resilience and strength of its people. It has become a symbol of pride and identity for Ghanaians both at home and abroad.
